When is the Best Time of Year to Pressure Wash?

September 21, 2023

The time of year that is best to power wash varies based on where you live, but in Dayton, Ohio, the general rule of thumb is to power wash your home once a year, sometime between March and November, except for during extreme temperatures. And as we all know, Ohio is a mixed bag of weather during March to November so let’s get into the details so that you can determine the best day for your home.

Optimal Seasons to Power Wash

Since you want to avoid extreme temperatures, ideally the best seasons to really power wash your home are Spring and Fall. Considering Ohio winters can often be pretty cold, power washing during the winter or too late in fall can cause ice to form and leave dangerous areas around the outside of your home. On the other hand, power washing when it is too hot can cause streaks and stains, especially if you’re using chemicals. Now, although you really only have to power wash your home once a year and most things could be done in one season, it may be a good idea to split things up for some good reasons. Here is a guide on how you could split up the tasks between the two seasons.

Spring Power Washing

This is a great time to get exterior washing done because oftentimes the snow and ice during the winter can cause a buildup of grime and dirt around the exterior of your home. Siding, decks, roofs and gutters will probably be the most affected from the winter months, so make sure to tackle those first. Mold and mildew will begin to cause damage if left on surfaces for too long, and those can be expensive replacements. Soft washing these areas to remove any salt residue from the winter would also be a good task to add onto the spring to-do list.

Fall Power Washing

Although the winter brings along a lot of dirt and grime, there are a handful of less-delicate areas that can wait until the fall. Considering some of these are high-traffic and commonly used areas in summer, therefore making them susceptible to getting dirty, it wouldn’t make sense to power wash them before summer. These less-delicate and high-traffic areas include driveways, patios, porches, and other stone or cement surfaces. Of course, these areas should still be power washed regularly, especially because keeping them clean will improve their longevity.

Other Conditions to Consider

It’s important to pay attention to the weather and avoid any power washing when the weather is poor. Although some might think rain negates the need for pressure washing, it will only eliminate some dirt and dust and will instead promote more fungal growth and damage to your surfaces. In addition to rain, be sure to avoid high winds as well. When using a pressure washer with high winds, the wind gusts could easily change the direction of the water, causing it to be inefficient and even dangerous if it gets sprayed back at you. A light breeze is one thing, but always avoid heavy winds.

Safe and Glowing Pressure Washing

Want your house to be clean and glowing before winter? Pressure washing is good for your home, and it looks good, but make sure you hire a trusted
pressure washing company that can do the job safely without damaging your home. Now is a great time to schedule an appointment to get your fall pressure washing to-do list finished. Just keep a close eye on the weather as the day approaches and talk to your technician if anything needs rescheduled due to weather conditions.
